Need to Know

Effective Communication with Healthcare Providers

At Alvita Care, we understand how important it is for seniors and their families to feel heard and understood during medical appointments. Whether you’re in New York City, New Jersey, Westchester, or Long Island, clear communication with your healthcare providers is essential for maintaining your health, safety, and peace of mind.

Here are some helpful strategies to ensure you make the most out of each visit, along with a few safety reminders to help you prepare.

  1. Write Down Your Concerns Ahead of Time

Before your appointment, take a few minutes to jot down any symptoms, changes in health, or questions you may have. Organize them by importance so your most pressing issues are discussed first.

Tip: Bring a printed list or keep a small notebook just for medical information.

  1. Bring a Support Person If Possible

Whether it’s a family member, care manager, or home health aide, having someone with you can help you remember details and provide emotional support. They can also assist in communicating if you feel overwhelmed or have trouble hearing or understanding.

Alvita Care Reminder: Many clients in NYC and surrounding areas benefit from having a caregiver accompany them to appointments. This can be part of your customized care plan.

  1. Be Honest and Specific

Tell your doctor exactly how you’re feeling—even if something seems minor or embarrassing. Be specific:

  • When did the issue begin?
  • How often does it occur?
  • What seems to trigger or relieve it?

Open communication helps your provider offer accurate diagnoses and effective care.

  1. Ask for Clarification

Never hesitate to ask your provider to explain something again or in simpler terms. Questions you might ask include:

  • “Can you show me what you mean?”
  • “What are my options?”
  • “Are there risks or side effects I should know about?”
  1. Use a Medication List

Maintain a current list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements, including dosage and frequency. Bring it to every appointment.

Safety Tip: Note any changes in how you feel after starting new medications and share this with your provider. Alvita can also help with medication management and pre-pouring your medication.

  1. Know Your Rights as a Patient

You have the right to:

  • Be informed about your care
  • Ask for second opinions
  • Decline treatment
  • Be treated with dignity and respect

If something doesn’t feel right, speak up or have a trusted person advocate on your behalf.

  1. Follow Up in Writing

After your visit, write down what was discussed—diagnoses, recommendations, and next steps. If you receive care at home, your caregiver or care manager can help review and organize this information.
